To: All Research Tennis Club Members

It is disappointing to have to report that the Club has received a very concerning complaint that a fellow club member was the subject of racial vilification during the course of recent evening competition match play. The objectionable comments that were made were corroborated by other players on court at the time.

Whilst the person who made the comments was a spectator and a member of the general public (not a club member) it is nevertheless distressing that an incidence of this nature has occurred at our Club. The person involved has been advised that they are no longer welcome on club premises.

Our tennis club prides itself on its friendly and inclusive nature, as well as its commitment to ensuring all club members feel safe and respected whilst involved in our wide variety of club activities. Indeed, the Club’s Mission Statement and Values, which are appended below and appear prominently on the home page of our website, specifically commit to these expectations.

Whilst we have limited control over members of the general public, I nevertheless thought it timely to remind all club members of our expectations regarding their own behaviour and demeanour whilst engaged in club activities.

Whilst I am truly hopeful that this is an isolated incident, I look to all our members to make sure that, should there be any future instances where you believe our values are not being appropriately respected, they are promptly (but respectfully) called out at the time and then reported to the Committee, such that Research can continue to enjoy its friendly and inclusive reputation.

Thank you.

Mike Paterson
President Research Tennis Club

Examining Racism in Community Sport

Monash University are inviting people to participate in the research project - Examining Racism in Community Sport. This survey aims to understand how racism impacts community sport and what can be done to help address it. Participation in community sport can provide many benefits for communities. However, experiencing racism in community sport can be harmful.

They invite anyone over the age of eighteen, who is or has been involved in playing or the delivery of community sport, to complete the survey. You may be an athlete, parent of a child athlete, coach, volunteer, committee member or spectator. Whatever your involvement in community sport, your views are welcomed. Your insights will assist sporting organisations to develop solutions to respond to racism within community sport.
Completing the survey takes around 10 mins. Your participation is voluntary, confidential, and anonymous.
